About the event
In August 2023, the historic tall shipOosterschelde, a 50 meter long, three-masted schooner, will embark on a 2023-2025 Global Voyage following Charles Darwin’s famous journey on the HMSBeagle. The tall ship will stop in the locations where Darwin made landfall, including 50 extended stays in these locations.
There are three main objectives:
· Train 200 young conservationists from different countries and territories, to help change the world of tomorrow.
· Inspire students globally through the World’s Most Exciting Classroom live events and educational resources.
· Solve real conservation problems through interactive research and science projects. There will be 5 projects carried out around the world: a coral reef study, a habitat survey, global plastic trawl, whale/dolphin survey, and the exploration of ocean pollution solutions.
The voyage will be broken up into 32 legs, and one spot on each leg will be donated to the Explorers Club, to be given to members, grantees, and nextgen/bluegen professionals through an application process.
Anyone can apply if they are interested in joining the ship somewhere in the world during the 2-year journey, and are willing to take part in the 5 global research projects while onboard. There will be an opportunity to join the live education events.
(During the selection process, applicants with a proposed research project that can be conducted onboard will be given extra consideration – although it is not a dealbreaker not to have a project!)
You can apply for one leg or several legs in a row, depending on what would be most beneficialto you. Airfare is not included, but your accommodation on the ship and meals are covered.
When the ship is in port after your leg(s), you can use the ship as your base of operations.
To apply, please fill out and submit the application form as soon as you can:
