About the event
This Knowledge Dialogue will discuss the nature-related commitments from the recent climate change meeting in Glasgow (UNFCCC CoP26) and what will be needed to deliver on them in the year ahead. This includes expectations for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework to be agreed in Kunming, China (CoP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity) and follow-up of forest and similar initiatives launched in Glasgow and others which may be launched in the context of Kunming. Considering that Parties to the UNFCCC agreed in Glasgow to raise the ambition of their climate action offers in their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) by the next Conference of the Parties in Egypt in late 2022, there is an opportunity for the conservation community to work with Parties to identify more ambitious opportunities for nature-based climate solutions, ones that conform to IUCN’s global Nature-based Solutions standard to ensure they meet equity and sustainability objectives. There are also considerable opportunities to engage further with the financial sector, which was quite visible in Glasgow, to advance the 76th UNGA Second Committee’s call for “national and international efforts to integrate sustainability into the financial system and thus to further re-orient capital flows towards investments that are sustainable from an economic, social and environmental perspective”, for example, through the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures. All these opportunities will be discussed at this Knowledge Dialogue.
