IUCN Digest - 8 February 2022
Welcome to the bi-weekly digest for IUCN Members and IUCN Commission members.
Message from the Director General

Rangelands and pastoralists Resolution 009 from Marseille calls on us to conserve the world’s rangelands and grasslands – which comprise over 54% of the planet's land area and support more than 2 billion livelihoods. IUCN endorses the petition to the United Nations (UN) by IUCN State Member Mongolia to declare 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP). The UN General Assembly will vote on the IYRP next Monday (28 February), and I urge IUCN State Members to vote in favour, and join the 75 governments worldwide who already support this proposal.
This UN vote will take place while I am in Nairobi for the 5th session of the UN Environment Assembly, which has the theme of "Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals". This special gathering will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UN Environment Programme. Please engage with us in these two weeks as we take concrete steps towards achieving the 2030 Agenda.
